ABGC visit sugar shack to learn about maple syrup

Club members learning how the tree tap works.

The Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club brought the kids out to the visit the Sugar Shack, in Hogansburg last week. This was a trip for their cultural class that is held weekly, for each age group.

Myles LaFrance and Jacob Cook indulge in the finished project.

The group was able to see how they tap the trees to get the sap, along with the long heating process as well as how much work it requires to make just one gallon of maple syrup. They also learned that the sap from the maple tree is used as a cleansing medicine for our people. They were able see the different aspects of how Maple Syrup is made.

Questions and interest were great! The Akwesasne Boys and Girls Club would like to send a BIG niawen to the men who spend countless hours tapping and boiling the maple syrup; it is truly an invaluable service that you provide to the community and to our future generations.
