Native musician visits local schools

Star Nayea

Star Nayea, a NAMMY-award winning singer and songwriter, visited Akwesasne last week to speak to students at Kana:takon School and Salmon River about healing through music.

The contemporary artist has spent the past five years traveling around the country speaking to children and teenagers about her own life and how music has impacted her life

“I talk about the healing power of music,” Nayea said.

Nayea spoke to students at Kana:takon School.

The Native American has an interesting story to share with the Native students she speaks to. Although her physical features clearly identify her as a Native, she hasn’t been able to find out where she comes from as she was adopted by a non-Native family at a young age. The details of her adoption are unknown and the singer hopes that during her travels she might one day find out where her roots are.

Being passionate about an issue has given the singer something to write and perform about and she has released five albums in all. Though she plays instruments, she said she usually prefers to since a cappella.

Nayea was able to visit Akwesasne at the last minute after picking up a NAMMY from the Native American Music Awards ceremony in Niagara Falls last week. She won best singer/songwriter of 2008.
