Re-creation of the Indian Lacrosse Championship Flag

Submitted by Hannah C. Lazare, Head Researcher and Writer 2008 Tewaarathon Lacrosse Book, Ronathahon:ni Cultural Center

Lenora David, local talented seamstress, and her Artistic grandson, Louis David, took on the task of re-creating the Akwesasne Indian Lacrosse Championship Flag, which was played for by local Indian teams during the 1800’s to the early 1930’s. The flag was originally created in the 1800’s for the Indian Lacrosse Championships, when Indian players were banned from playing on non-Indian teams. Unfortunately, the original flag was burned during a house fire, and the re-creation of this flag was done from pictures taken from the 1978 Tewaarathon Lacrosse book. The re-created flag will be showcased to the public at the A’nowara’ko:wa Arena during the 2008 Nations Cup championship, which will be played here in Akwesasne in September.

The re-creation of the Indian Lacrosse Championship Flag is a project of the Ronathahon:ni Cultural Center to promote the rich history of Lacrosse in the community.
