Tribe announces caucus/election dates for empty sub-chief position
The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe – with support from tribal members at a recent tribal meeting – will hold a caucus and special election to fill the empty sub-chief position.
A sub-chief was elected at the regular June election but before taking oath Joseph Phillips opted not to take office.
“As a result of this unexpected turn of events we are making arrangements for a special election,” said Katrina Jacobs, Election Board member.
A motion from the floor was also taken Saturday at the July Tribal Meeting, and a unanimous vote indicated tribal members also wanted a special election held.
Nominations will be made at a caucus scheduled for Saturday, July 26, 2008 at 10 a.m. in the Community Building. The special election will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2008 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Absentee ballots will be available on August 11.
The special election will be for the position of sub-chief only, a three-year term.
“Now that we have the details worked out, we were able to set the caucus and election dates,” said Jacobs. “Again, as I mentioned before, we wanted to make sure that interested candidates will have enough time to go through the nomination and campaign processes.”
