Scrap City opens on Cornwall Island

Joann Boots opened Scrap City last week.

A new business venture was unveiled this weekend on Kawehno:ke (Cornwall Island.) Scrap City, a scrapbooking store, was opened on the west end by Joann Boots.

Boots, who also owns East End Auto Parts and Construction, said her own interests in scrapbooking lead to her desire to open her own store.

“Oh I’m a maniac!” she said. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do but I never had the nerve [until now].”

Boots said she joined the scrapbooking craze six or seven years ago and hasn’t stopped since.

“And now I can sit here and scrapbook all day long,” she said. “It’s very relaxing.”

She opened her store in a small, private building near the Thompson Memorial Wellness Center. The building was previously occupied by a photography studio.

The store offers a little bit of everything in terms of scrapbooking supplies. From tools to paper, and from albums to embellishments, Boots said anything they don’t have now, they’ll get.

“I have just about everything, from all different companies,” she said.

Although there are two scrapbooking stores on the southern portion of Akwesasne, Scrap City is the first to open on the northern side.

In her first week in business, Boots said her sports themed items practically sold out.

The store is going to stay as is for the summer, but in the fall, Boots said she hopes to offer classes and possibly add in special order services. For now, though, she is strictly a supply store.

The hours of Scrap City are Monday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
