Late Rally Falls Short Jr. A Indians lose tough one to Six Nations, beat Burlinton

The players and coaches said before the game that this was their test.

After getting an F in the first period, and a C in the second period they pulled together their best 20 minutes of the season for an A in the third period.

In the end it wasn’t enough, as they couldn’t erase the 7-1 and 8-3 deficits they faced against the Six Nations Arrows Express after the first and second periods. Six Nations wound up with a 9-8 win.

“The guys showed a lot of character and heart to come back after that first period…I just told them (after the 2nd) that they had to play as a team, play together,” lamented head coach Adam Thompson afterwards. “Next time, they get to play us in our barn.”

On the stat sheet Akwesasne appeared to have Six Nations beat, out-shooting them and dominating them on both loose balls and face-offs. And over the final 40 minutes they allowed just two goals while keeping the league’s leading scorer Cody Jamieson in check with 2 assists, no small feat for a guy who averages more than 5 points per contest.

Kyle Buchanan, and Jeremy Thompson scored twice each while Miles Thompson, Justin Oakes, Lyle Thompson and Peter Jacobs had the other goals.

It would have been easy for the Indians to look past their Saturday night game with the Burlington Chiefs because of the Six Nations game, but the team was solid in getting a 7-3 victory.

Justin Delormier was stellar in nets throughout the game, especially in the third where he never let Burlington get in the game including one spectacular toe save on a breakaway.

Miles Thompson had a 4 assist game while Buchanan, Jacobs, Mark Kirby and Jerome Thompson all had 3 point nights. Trent Thomas and Blake Kenny added goals in the team’s 8th win of the year through 12 games.

Buchanan now sits 4th in league scoring with Jerome Thompson now sitting tied for 8th while brother Jeremy is 17th. Their firepower will be needed when first place Orangeville Northmen comes to visit next weekend at the Turtle. The Northmen have been the league’s stingiest defense allowing just 5.25 goals against per game.

First up will be a trip to Peterborough for the Indians before hosting Toronto next Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
