Mohawk Council of Akwesasne to observe National Day of Action on Parliament Hill

Transportation Being Provided For Akwesasne Community Members

Akwesasne, ONTARIO — The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is asking community members to use the National Day of Action on May 29th as an opportunity to stand together on Parliament Hill to call for improved relations with the federal government. Council members and Akwesasne residents will be joining other First Nations People in supporting events being coordinated by the Assembly of First Nations to voice the concerns of communities across the country, including Akwesasne.

According to MCA Grand Chief Tim Thompson, “Last Year’s National Day of Action event has helped to raise issues of concern to the community of Akwesasne.” Grand Chief Thompson added, “We’ll now focus our strategy and join other First Nations People in addressing the injustices that our communities have endured.”

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne will provide transportation for Akwesasne community members to participate in the Assembly of First Nation’s events being held in Ottawa. Buses will be leaving the Peace Tree Trade Center on Kawehnoke at 10am on May 29th. Anyone interested in participating is welcomed to attend.

Speakers and entertainment are scheduled to begin at 10am on Victoria Island, traditional land of the Algonquin Nation, followed by a march to Parliament Hill for a peaceful rally at 1pm.

Grand Chief Thompson added that, “Any protest held in Akwesasne on the National Day of Action is not sanctioned by MCA and will only serve to disrupt the ability of community members to cross the border. Our community’s issues with the federal government are best voiced on Parliament Hill, not in Akwesasne.”
