Salmon River improves to 4-0; Massena lax teams down all except Canton

The Salmon River Shamrocks have improved to 4-0 this season and the Massena Raiders were able win most of their games the week of April 9, but neither the boys nor the girls contingents were able to best Canton.

The Shamrocks boys varsity lacrosse team won their fourth game of the season on April 10, a 15-8 decision over the host Potsdam Sandstoners. Salmon River led 6-3 after the opening quarter and improved to 10-6 at halftime then held the competition to two goals in the remainder of the game.

Rowisonkies Barnes notched four goals and a helper. Nicholas Tremblay scored four times. Treyton Mitchell and Keldren King (one assist) each netted a pair of goals. Trevan David, Talon Thompson and Tahnaokata Elijah all scored solo goals. Ryan Oakes Jr. turned aside five shots. On the Potsdam side, Cameron Talcott led the offense with three goals and two assists. Nathan Green made 14 saves.

Massena on April 9 turned back Potsdam and went on to down Saranac Lake two days later but were stopped by Canton on April 12.

The final score of the Potsdam game was 10-5. Massena scored three unanswered first quarter goals and stayed ahead 7-3 going into the final frame. Montana Pierce scored two goals with an assist. Toryn Sawatis scored once. Blake Premo netted three goals and one assist. Zach LaBarge scored twice with two assists. Gage Fiacco had a pair of goals and one helper. Nick Morrell assisted a single play. Hayden Hoerner made 13 saves. For Potsdam, Hunter Ploof scored twice and Cam Talcott had a goal and two assists. Nate Green made nine saves. Gavin Mattimore made one save filling in for Green who was sidelined on a penalty in the second half.

On April 11, Massena worked up to a 5-3 halftime lead and went on to turn back Saranac Lake 11-4 on their home turf. Pierce anchored the Raiders with four goals and a helper. Sawatis scored a single goal. Premo had two goals and two assists. LaBarge had a pair of goals with one helper. Fiacco (three assists) and Morrell (one assist) each scored solo goals. Hoerner made 12 saves. For Saranac Lake, Emery Swanson scored twice. Ward Walton made 15 saves.

The following night, Massena fell to Canton 15-6 at home. They were tied 3-3 going into the second stanza, where Canton reeled off seven unanswered goals to take control of the game. For Massena, Kainen Francis-Thompson scored three goals. Fiacco scored twice and Premo once. Hoerner and Devon Jolley split netminder detail, respectively tallying six and nine saves. For Canton, Cody Sipher and John Mahoney led the offense with four goals and a helper each. Nick Beldock made 11 saves.

Massena's April 14 game at Ballston Spa was postponed.

The Lady Raiders varsity lacrosse team broke even in two games against Potsdam and Canton.

On April 9, they turned back visiting Potsdam 16-8. Abigail Johnson led offensively with four goals and a helper. Kayla Hinkley scored three times. Julia Blair (two helpers), Aryssa Hopps (one helper) and Lindsay Ladue all scored twice. Claire Tyo (two assists), Sophia Mitchell and Meagan Morgan each scored once. Gisele Todd denied eight scoring attempts. Mattie Tremper led Potsdam with four goals. Olivia Scott (four saves) and Julia Basford (two saves) each spent time in the Potsdam net.

On April 12, Massena lost to hosts Canton 12-6. Blair scored a hat trick. Hinkley, Ladue and Johnson all scored once. Todd turned aside eight shots. Morgan Whitman led Canton's offense with three goals and two assists. Paige Glasgow made 15 saves.

Massena's April 14 game at Indian River was postponed.

Winter weather wiped out a several baseball and softball games. Massena at Midlakes baseball on April 13 was postponed to the next day, and then canceled. Salmon River's home game against Madrid-Waddington on April 13 was postponed, as was their April 14 contest at Canton. A Massena at Malone softball game was postponed to May 14 and their April 13 bout at Gouverneur was also postponed.
