FLORENCE ANN LAZORE COOK "WAHIANORON"

Florence Ann Lazore Cook "Wahianoron", 87 years of age, a resident of Iakhihsohtha, left this world Sunday evening, March 4, 2018. Florence was born July 15, 1930 in Tsi Snaihne, the daughter of Mose and Josephine Curry Lazore. She married Abram W. Cook in 1952 in the St. Regis Catholic Church.

Florence was one of Akwesasne's most talented sweetgrass basket and quilt makers. Her beautiful baskets and quilts were sold near and far. In 2014, she was given a certificate of appreciation for preserving our cultural heritage as a Mohawk Basket Maker, by the Akwesasne Cultural Center Board of Directors. One of her baskets is also proudly on display at the New York State Museum in Albany, NY.

She worked the family farm during her youth and also as an adult to provide for her family. She cleaned for the Viskovich family of Fay Motors for many years. She worked for 20 years at North Country Home Care, before taking a cleaning position at the Akwesasne Library, until her retirement. She instilled a very, very strong work ethic in all of her children.

She was a long standing member of the Mohawk Choir and would often be in attendance singing and praying at many wakes and funerals, along with being a communicant of the St Regis Catholic Church. She was a proud member of the Akwesasne Cloggers. She loved the Original Kentucky Fried Chicken and also enjoyed New Gardens back in the day. Florence also loved her new cars she bought at Fay Motors. She enjoyed playing Bingo, especially CKON Radio Bingo. She held so many special people dear to her heart throughout her life. All of those who were close to her have fond memories of their special time together and how Florence made them feel. She will be lovingly missed by all who knew her.

Florence is survived by 3 sons and 2 daughters Ted and Shiela Cook, Julius Cook, Caroline Cook, and Joe and Barbara Cook all of Akwesasne, and Roberta and Vincent Mazzarella of Orange Park, Florida.

Cherished grandmother of her 17 grandchildren: Reen, Tim, Ted, Tyler, Leah, Adam, Michael, Kevin, Joelle, Corrina, Misty, Ryan, Dalton, Niko, Savannah, Calogero and Alfonse and great-grandmother to 19 great-grandchildren: Dakota, Timmy, Kade, Gracie, Tempe, Colston, Trenton, Tazia, Shyne, Skye, Price, Keeson, Rylan, Addison, Colten, Brenna, Flint, Fire and Blazen and chosen grandmother of Karennotakies, Rowisonkies, Karennahawi and Onahkwiio.

Lovingly remembered by one sister and her best friend Mary Herne, her godchild Doris Lazore, and her special niece with the beautiful voice, Kathy Herne.

She will also be greatly missed by many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, cousins and friends.

Along with her parents and her husband, Florence was predeceased by a daughter-in-law Audrey Burns-Cook, by 5 brothers and 4 sisters: Sarah Lazore, Dave Curry, Louise and Gene Louis Lazore both in infancy, Harriet, John, Helen, Jake and Angus Lazore, and by a chosen brother Frank Lazore Cook Jr.

The family would like to thank the staff of Iakhihsohtha and their volunteers for taking such wonderful care of Florence while she was a resident.

Arrangements entrusted to the care of Lahaie & Sullivan Cornwall Funeral Homes, 20 Seventh Street West, (613-932-8482).

As per her wishes, cremation will take place. There will be a funeral service to be held in July.
