This past Friday December 8th, 2017 the Akwesasne Holiday helpers and sponsors hosted their annual jail and bail, $20,000 raffle and Mohawk auction. Community members were able to sign up for a Christmas basket before the sign-ups were closed at 4 pm the same day. The event had a great turnout, with many coming to eat and try their luck at winning a prize from the Mohawk auction. There were lots of great laughs and good times had; members from the community were jailed and had to wait for a generous and kind soul to bail them out, or pay to keep them in jail. The event helped to raise funds to help purchase food items for the Christmas basket.

There was plenty of toys and food donated, not only during the event, but before at different locations throughout Akwesasne. The community really comes together this time of the year to help out in any way they can whether it be through donations, volunteering, sponsoring or purchasing raffle tickets. This is always a community effort, it would not be the same if everyone did not pitch in a helping hand or two.

The event began with breakfast being sold, while all the community members nominated for the jail and bail were getting locked up for the day. The breakfast was just $5.00; with it you got pancakes, eggs, bacon, corn beef hash and Tim Horton's coffee. Lunch was served later in the day; for $5.00 you got either macaroni soup or corn soup with your choice of fried bread or ham or turkey sandwich. All the proceeds went towards the holiday helpers and helping to purchase items for the Christmas baskets. Community members were able to drop in for lunch or breakfast and purchase a meal and drop off toy or food donations at the same time.

A Mohawk auction was set up throughout the event, with items donated by many different businesses and organizations. The jail and bail was hosted by the Boys & Girls Club this year. Matt Rourke from the Akwesasne Holiday Helpers committee stated, "Thanks to all community members, organizations and businesses who helped to contribute in one way or another. TMG, Twinleaf, Boys and Girls Club, SRMT, MCA, Bears Den, Akwesasne Mohawk Casino, Swamp's Performance, Speedway. I hate to forget and leave anyone out, there was so many from the community and surrounding areas who helped out. Niawen for all the time and effort put into making this year's Holiday baskets and fundraising successful."
