Massena football loses home opener to Potsdam; girl's soccer splits two games with Canton and Salmon River

In varsity football action, Massena lost to Potsdam 40-16 on Sept. 8 at Mike Nichols Field in Massena.

Massena led 10-0 after a 21-yard field goal by Merrick Taraska in the first quarter, followed by a nine-yard rushing touchdown by Gage Fiacco with 7:41 left in the second quarter. With mere seconds before halftime, Massena quarterback Montana Pierce lobbed the ball 50 yards to Chris Paige to make the score 16-8.

The second half saw Potsdam outscore Massena 40-6.

Potsdam's Brandon Buffham rushed 204 yards on 30 carries with three touchdowns.

Pierce ended the game rushing 27 yards on 10 attempts. He made seven tackles on defense and assisted two. A stats sheet did not include Pierce's passing numbers from the Potsdam game. Mike Gardner made 15 tackles and assisted five. Massena's Gage Fiacco rushed 153 yards on 15 carries.

The girl's soccer team downed Salmon River on Sept. 6 and went on to suffer a loss to Canton two nights later.

In the Salmon game, Nova LeGrow booted two goals in the first half and Kayliegh Peets netted the third six minutes into the second half. Assists came from Katy Underwood, Lexie McGregor and Chloe Violi. Lindsey Montroy handled eight shots in the net.

In the Canton game, Massena lost 2-1 on the road. Violi scored Massena's goal. Montroy turned aside 12 shots. Hannah Reed and Abigail Dent scored for Canton.

The boy's varsity soccer team beat Salmon River 2-0 on Sept. 8 in the Bill O'Neill tournament. The Saturday tournament championship was canceled. Massena Coach Jeff Slack did not respond to a request for comment.
