Bruyere Hospital & Ottawa Hospital Reps Welcomed to White Pine Healing Lodge

The White Pine Healing Lodge is gaining support for the development of an adult drug and alcohol treatment centre on Cornwall Island. In summer 2016 WPHL started collaboration with Bruyere Hospital Ottawa and with Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. These two Ottawa institutions are involved in the prevention, research and treatment of addiction problems of Aboriginal people. WPHL, together with the Ottawa Hospitals, has received the Partnership Development Grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Dr. Bev Shea of Bruyere Hospital was in charge of the successful partnership grant preparation and she and her colleagues also facilitated a visit of the representatives from two Labrador Aboriginal communities, where people suffer from very similar health problems and the community health specialists are looking for partnerships and culturally suitable treatment facilities.

Dr. Beverly Shea and Nelson David White present gifts of sweetgrass and black ash baskets to representatives from Labrador.

On January 21, 2017 visitors from the Mushuau Innu First Nation and the Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation in Labrador were welcomed to the White Pine Healing Lodge. Representatives from the Ottawa Bruyere Hospital,

Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, St. Michaels Hospital in Toronto,

Ottawa Population Health Institute and the Federation of Canadian

Municipalities were also welcomed.

The full-day workshop included presentations from Nelson White, owner of the WPHL facility, from the representatives of the Labrador communities and from the health specialists. Situation in the communities was reviewed and compared, and urgent need for culturally suitable post-treatment facilities was discussed in detail. Further steps for collaboration of WPHL, Labrador communities and health organizations were discussed as well.

Important parts of the workshop were a presentation focusing on the construction and development of WPHL, tour of the facility and a dinner prepared by WPHL.
