Akwesasne Chiefs Season Canceled Due to Roster Shortage

The Akwesasne Chiefs will not play hockey this season and may not come back in the future.

Phil DeFranco, who had been involved with the team said they didn’t get enough players for a full roster.

He deferred further comment to Stuart Oberman, who was the team’s owner. Oberman did not return phone calls.

DeFranco added that canceling the season was also to not add to their debts.

The team’s website, akwesasnechiefs.com, makes no mention of the season being canceled.

The Chiefs was a junior team for ages 16 to 20.

DeFranco said he feels they told the team early enough in the season so players could find other teams.
