Spring is in the Air

By Jennifer Herne, LVT

It's beginning to warm up and you can smell the spring in the air lately...I don't mean flowers, I mean skunk! It's the time of year when your dog wants to start running around chasing skunks. I have tried many over the counter remedies and have yet to find one that works. I came across this recipe on the internet and wanted to share it with you. The ingredients make sense, from a chemistry standpoint. Here it goes and if you try it and it works send me a message at Fluffytails@yahoo.com and I might share your story. And please send us pictures of your pet.

Recipe for skunk smell removal:

1 bottle hydrogen peroxide

½ bottle water (a cup or so)

¼ cup baking soda

1 teaspoon dog shampoo or Dawn dish detergent

Mix the first 2 ingredients and add remaining ingredients. Pour into a squirt bottle. Use the entire solution, being careful not to get any into your dogs eyes. Allow it to sit on pets for at least 10 minutes and then rinse well. I have also heard that Wintergreen essential oil will eliminate odors in the air rapidly. Some tips given were not to use the peroxide on black fur because it could cause discoloration.

Just a friendly reminder to always make sure your pets' rabies vaccination is up to date. Skunks can be a source of rabies.
