MCA COMMUNITY HEALTH PROGRAM LIFTS DRINKING WATER ADVISORY

(8/10/15) The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne would like to inform the community that based on the most updated information on the safety of the river water, the Drinking Water Advisory for Pilon Island, Dickerson Island, Colquhoun Island, Clark Island, Stanley Island, Jacobs Island, Renshaw Island and Little Hog Island is no longer in effect.

The final tugboat that was submerged into the St. Lawrence River has been removed from the water. The work tugboat LCM 131 was loaded on a flatbed trailer and hauled away to an undisclosed location Sunday, August 9, 2015.

Residents that utilize a private water system or small drinking water system that draws water from the St. Lawrence River can now resume using their system. Prior to resuming household use, residents should run each of the household cold water taps for at least five minutes or until the water runs clear. Residents in the region can also resume swimming at beaches located near these islands.

For more information on the lift of the Drinking Water Advisory, please contact Naeem Irshad, Environmental Health Officer at 613-575-2341 ext. 3226.
