Akwesasne Mohawk Police warn residents after rash of B & E's

A string of break and enters in the District of Tsi Snaihne have prompted a warning from police about locking doors, windows, garages, sheds and vehicles. Police are also warning residents to lock their vehicles and to avoid leaving any valuables in plain sight.

The same culprits are believed responsible for at least four B & E’s in the District of Tsi Snaihne this past month.

Police believe that most of the break-ins are happening at night, and most of the time the thieves just walk in an unlocked door or use a window. They’re mostly looking to take things they can re-sell or pawn.

Police believe the culprits are using an ATV to transport the stolen items.

If you have been approached by anyone trying to sell you items that you believe may be stolen, please forward this information to police at (613) 575-2340. Any information provided could greatly assist police investigators in arresting these culprits.

Should you hear or observe anything suspicious contact Akwesasne Central Dispatch immediately at (613) 575-2000.

Police are also giving out a few tips to keep yourself and your things safe:

• Keep your home and garage locked at all times.  Lock your vehicles whether they are parked inside or outside the garage.

• Install deadbolt locks on your doors for added security, and install lights near entranceways to keep the areas well lit at night.

• Help police track stolen items by recording the make, model, and serial number of significant items in your home or garage.  You can also engrave your name on items, keep the receipts, or take photos, which helps police return the property to owners.

• Report stolen items to police as soon as possible.

• Report suspicious activities to police immediately; dogs barking late at night etc.…

• Be aware of persons or vehicles in your neighbourhood, and look out for your neighbours as well.
