Akwesasne Cornwall Job Fair 2015

Alex de Wit and Stacy Skidders organized the Job Fair at the Cornwall Civic Center. This Job Fair is the first collaboration between the City of Cornwall and Akwesasne.

The Akwesasne Cornwall Job Fair 2015 began as collaboration between the two communities and based on attendance, working together is the key to success for everyone. With over 1200 people attending the job Fair at the Cornwall Civic Complex, future collaboration will continue in the future. Doors opened at noon and by 3pm, over 800 people had walked through the Civic Complex door to the Job Fair. Job seekers, many with resumes in hand and ready to be interviewed on the spot had the opportunity to speak directly to local employers face to face. Others filled out applications hoping to seek a new job or to find better opportunities in the workplace.

The Social Development Council's Alex de Wit said, "Stacy Skidders did most of the work; she was the one who pulled all of this together. It was a pleasure to work with her on this project and we hope this continues next year."

Sharon Sunday, from Tarbell Management Group, said they were looking for a number of employees for their many companies. Tarbell owns the Comfort Inn beside the casino, three convenience stores, a Tim Horton's and other hospitality-based franchises.

Volunteers from the Akwesasne Job Finding Club assisted throughout the Job Fair; here they are accepting surveys from participants.

"We're always looking for cashiers, fuel attendants, cooks and dishwashers," she said.

Besides local companies, other organizations were present to help you find what you needed to improve your chances of finding gainful employment. St. Lawrence College, Job Zone and T.R. Leger School, were present, providing information on the various programs and training they offer.

Organizers, Stacy Skidders and Brain de Wit said there is a strong possibility this partnership between Akwesasne and Cornwall will continue.

"We're hoping this will become an annual event," said Skidders. "Maybe next year we can hold it at A'nowara'ko:wa Arena and the following year come back here."

de Witt added, "I think this is a great partnership and it's working well and I'd be happy to keep working together."
