Federal Election 2015

Loran Thompson, Justin Trudeau and Beverly Pyke.

On December 10, 2014, a Liberal dinner at the Westin Hotel was attended by several directors of the SDSG Riding Association. Loran Thompson attended as a guest of Beverly Pyke and William Beattie.

Ms. Pyke and Mr. Beattie are directors of the Riding Association and have been for a number of years. We are enthused about the upcoming federal election. There is excitement in the air as we practice democracy by electing a new government under the leadership of Justin Trudeau.

There is a possibility that the government may call an election after the budget and before the trial of Duffy as that trial has negative connotations towards the current Harper government. The current government has had negative relations with the indigenous people of Canada for some time. It is up to you to make a change. We need everyone to get out the vote.

Some people will have you believing that onkwehonwe do not vote. We need to dispel the myth that we are not allowed to vote. When you vote or participate in band elections, you are already participating in the Canadian system of governance. So, get out the vote and let's get rid of the current conservative government regime. Your voice must be heard in Ottawa and the best way is to vote the Harper government out.

The population of Akwesasne could make the difference in the local riding associations. Akwesasne is part of the Stormont Dundas and South Glengarry Electoral District Association, as well as the Beauharnois Salaberry EDA.

Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party of Canada is the only political party with an aboriginal commission. He is receptive to having dialogue with the indigenous people and policies are being developed by the Aboriginal Peoples Commission of the Liberal Party.

At our last Annual General Meeting held this fall, Cheryl Jacobs was selected as the Akwesasne representative. We look forward to greater participation of all peoples in the upcoming election and the political process.

It is imperative that all peoples have their say in the upcoming federal election.

Beverly Pyke
