Jr. B Indians Advance to Third Round Playoffs

 


The Akwesasne Indians will advance to the third round of the 2014 Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League playoffs after defeating the Oakville Buzz. The Indians pulled off what may have seemed to some as nearly impossible - coming back for three straight wins after trailing 2-0 in the best-of-five series.

“They did Akwesasne proud,” Indian’s Coach Garrett Cree wrote on Facebook following game five. “Thanks for all your support, Akwesasne.”

The Indians advance to face the Halton Hills Bulldogs. Game one is slated for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 26 in Georgetown.

The series opened with Oakville taking back-to-back wins at Anowarakowa Arena. Then the Indians traveled to Oakville and took three wins in a row on their opponent’s turf.

Game three, played Friday, July 18, was a 13-9 win for Akwesasne.

In game four, the following day, the Buzz hopped out to lead 5-2 after the first period. Akwesasne came back to score evenly with their foes, each side scoring six goals in the 20-minute span. In the third stanza, the Indians retook the helm and shut out the other team 5-0.

Gale Thorpe, Seth Oakes, Ky Tarbell and Russ Oakes each fired a pair of goals. Steph Charbonneau, Dalston Day, Kyle Lewis, Kiio Jacobs and Zack Hopps all scored single goals. Sam Verville and Donivan Fleischer worked the crease and fashioned a combined 29 saves.

On Sunday, July 20, the Indians sealed Oakville’s fate and ended their season with a 9-6 final decision. The match opened with the two sides trading goals throughout the first period, which ended with the squads tied 3-all. They outscored in the middle stanza 3-2, thanks to two goals from Ky Tarbell and one from Seth Oakes. Tarbell, Oakes and Zack Hopps combined for three goals to their opponent’s one in the closing frame.

Tarbell paced the team with three goals and three assists. Zack Hopps and Akwi David each scored twice. Seth Oakes and Russ Oakes recorded a goal each. Sam Verville turned aside 44 scoring attempts.
