Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe Issues Cease and Desist Order to Trash Removal Company for Non-Compliance

Environment Division Offers Cost-Effective Alternative

Akwesasne - The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Compliance Department is responsible for issuing businesses hauling residential and commercial wastes a “Permit for Solid Waste Transport/Collection.” The permit allows solid waste haulers to provide trash hauling services to the community and ensures the wastes are disposed of properly.  These permitted haulers take the wastes to the Tribal Transfer Station, where it is then taken to the Franklin County landfill for final disposal.

Recently, the Compliance Department issued a “cease and desist” order to C & L Trash Removal to stop collecting trash on Tribal territory.  C & L Trash Removal has not been compliant with the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe Solid Waste Management Code and failed to apply for a 2014 Solid Waste Transport/Collection permit.  Customers of C & L Trash Removal will need to find a tribally-permitted business for trash removal.  There are several permitted options, including the Pay As You Throw (PAYT) solution to trash removal.

PAYT is known for the thirty gallon yellow bag pick up service managed by the SRMT. The yellow bags are available for purchase from Speedway Convenience, Akwesasne Mini-Mart, the Transfer Station and the SRMT Environment Office. This cost effective alternative to standard trash pickup is ideal for people who recycle and compost or families who do not require weekly service. The cost can be as low as $5.00 per week, depending upon how well one recycles and composts. The price per gallon is $0.17 for a 30 gallon bag sold at $5.00. Other services average $0.42 per gallon for weekly service.  Recycling services are free and at two convenient locations, the recycling depot in Hogansburg and the transfer station.

The proper collection of solid waste is everyone’s responsibility.  Please do your part to protect our environment. The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe reminds the community about Spring Cleanup, our curbside collection of materials from May 19, 2014 through July 11, 2014. Further information about Spring Cleanup is available at http://www.srmtenv.org.
