On Saturday morning the Seniors Center in Hogansburg was the site for the annual Earth Day Celebration and Seed Giveaway hosted by the Akwesasne Task Force on the Environment. There were several booths with all kinds of information, and of course lots of seeds including cucumbers, peas, carrots, beets, pumpkins, radish, corn and much, much more. In fact there were several tables filled with seeds of all kinds.

Robert Miller from the USDA APHIS-PPQ, with daughter Angelica. Robert partners with the Tribe with the main goal of controlling the ash borer.

One organizer Margaret George said, "We're hoping that people grow them and then give us the seeds back. These are organic seeds so you can do that. That's the way to keep it going, to make sure we can do this every year, to preserve them." Margaret has been doing the seed giveaway for about 17 years.

Julia Jacobs with SRMT Environment said she's been doing the Earth Day Celebration for about 5 years. She is instrumental in getting a variety of people to the event including several people from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). "It gets them exposure out here, and people should know what they can offer," said Julia.
