ABGC Hosts Boot Hockey Tournament

Three teams participated in the Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club Boot Hockey Tournament on March 21st to benefit a fellow member who was recently diagnosed with a chronic illness. All pledges raised will be given to the family for travel expenses. Everyone is a winner in the tournament. Photo by Kenkiokwine Barnes.

There is nothing more honorable or satisfying than helping another in need. The young people involved in the Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club are learning this at an early age. Last Friday the club kicked off National Boys and Girls Club Week by sponsoring a Boot Hockey Tournament to benefit a fellow member who is in need of medical care.

Sticks were generously donated by T19 for the ABGC Boot Hockey Tournament to help raise money for a member in need.

Each participant collected pledges to raise money for a fellow member who was recently diagnosed with a chronic illness and needs to travel to Burlington for treatments. "Travel is expensive and we want to help the family. In this community we help each other and hold each other up," commented Akwesasne Child and Family Services worker, Brandon David. "The pledges and the physical activity are the important things, not so much the setup of the tournament. We just want to let them play since it is springtime and it's time to get them moving again."

Kids Helping Kids is a student run program that was originally started in San Marcos High School in Santa Barbara, California. The Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club uses the model on a yearly basis to help a child in need.

A special thank you goes out to Kristian Thompson from T19 for the donation of hockey sticks and ACFS for the use of the mobile unit. Thank you to all the ABGC members who unselfishly collected pledges for their friend in need.
