10 Free or Almost Free Events in the North Country

 


1. Hiking. The Adirondacks right next door to Akwesasne provides a range of trails from the novice to the experienced hiker to explore. Decide on a trail that matches your ability and time, wear good walking shoes (sure hiking shoes are great but not necessary, and make sure your boots are broken in). Check my past column dedicated to hiking in the Adirondacks for all the info.

2. Tupper Lake’s The Wild Center. This is a great place for children and adults alike. There is a fee, but if you stop in at the Akwesasne Library the librarian will happily give you a free pass. Otherwise the fee is $17 for an adult and $10 for a youth (4 to 14).

3. Frederic Remington Art Museum (Ogdensburg). This is a small but great museum displaying Remington’s world famous sculptures. Horse lovers and cowboys and cowgirls will truly appreciate the mastery of his realistic brass sculptures. Adults are $9, but any child under the age of 16 is FREE.

4. Oxbow Historical Association Summer Concert Series 2013. Held on Thursday evenings starting June 27 until August 1. From country music to drum and bugle corps, it’s music for all ages. Be sure to bring a blanket or chair to sit on. FREE.

5. Mirror Lake Music Series. Held on seven Tuesdays throughout the summer at 7:00pm at Mid’s Park on Main Street in Lake Placid, you are sure to find music that will please everyone – from rock to jazz to country. Check out their website at http://www.thepinesoflakeplacid.com. FREE

6. 45th Annual Potsdam Summer Festival July 12 -14, 2013. Starting with an ice cream social on the 12th, includes an outer market mania and Potsdam Community Band. On Sunday a Parade at 5:30pm. FREE

7. Kate Mountain Music Festival and BBQ held in Vermontville, NY on June 15, 2013. An outdoor concert, silent auction, games and activities for kids. Food, vendors and artisan’s tables. FREE

8. Fireworks over Boldt Castle in Alex Bay July 4, 2013. FREE

9. Norwood Village Green Concert Series, Norwood, NY. All concerts begin at 7:00pm, bring a chair or blanket. Most concerts are held on Thursdays and some Sundays. For a full schedule check them out at http://www.norwoodvillagegreenconcertseries.com. FREE

10. NYPA’s Fabulous Free Friday Matinees. Every Friday at 1:30 pm at the Hawkins Point Visitor’s Center, Massena, NY. FREE
