Marlon Mitchell Chubb


AKWESASNE – Mr. Marlon “Mitch” Chubb, age 58, of Kanatakon, unexpectedly passed away Monday afternoon, December 17, 2012 at Massena Memorial Hospital.

Mitch was born June 2, 1954 in Malone, the son of Helen Jacobs Chubb and the late Joseph C. Chubb. He attended and graduated from Salmon River Central School.  He married Bonnie Square in 1987, the marriage later ended in separation; she survives.

Mitch was a skilled carpenter having built many log homes in the area including Cornwall and worked for a time with Skidders Construction.  He also was an ironworker having worked in Kentucky, Oswego, and New York City and also worked for the Traveling College.  In addition, Mitch was a security guard in Ganienkeh for a time.  Mitch became disabled three years ago after suffering a stroke.  Although disabled, Mitch always had a smile and good humor to make people laugh.  He was a true warrior and helper from Sonkwaiatison.  A great man who knew and lived his traditional ways, he was always willing to help and share his knowledge and wisdom in medicines and ceremonies.  He was a great asset to the native community.  One with integrity, he was loved and respected by everyone who has crossed paths with him.  Mitch lived his live by his teaching, “Family is Always First.”  A loving father and Tota, he loved spending time with his grandchildren.  Tota Mitch” as he was known, not only to his grandchildren, but to the neighborhood children as well.  Mitch loved smiling, telling jokes, doing crafts, watching football, hitting the PowWow Trail, and riding his bike around the village visiting with his many friends.

He is survived by his mother, Helen; his children, Tracy and Jason Leaf; Shawn Chubb and his companion, Shawna Cook, all of Akwesasne; his beloved grandchildren, JJ, Tray, Kota, Jaida, Cruz, Camrie, Bria, Stone, Sienna, Shye, and Sequoya; his great grandchild, Roianekete Sunday-Square; his siblings, Cynthia and Newton LaFrance, Beverly and Wilfred Lazore, Wayne, Dennis, and Carl Chubb, Steve and Bev Chubb, Leo and MaryElla Chubb, Ray and Francine Chubb, Malcolm and Allison Chubb; his mother-in-law, Katherine Square; brother-in-law Randy and Carrie Square, and sisters-in-law Debbie and Donald Smoke and Stephanie Square and Michelle Davidson; a goddaughter Shayleen Lazore; Indian friend Freddy Lazore; special friends Tammy and Steve Henhawk; his dear friend for the past 6 years, Nanette Oakes; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mitch was predeceased by his father, Joseph on November 1, 1976; his brothers, Ronald D. Chubb on May 18, 1997 and Reginald A. Chubb on March 26, 2012; and his sister, Victoria in 1959; his father-in-law Stanley Square, 2 brothers-in-law Ricky and Ronnie Square, his sister-in-law Penny Square, and by his Indian Friend Raymond Mutt-Mitts Sprague.

Friends may call at his home in Kanatakon, beginning Wednesday 3:00 PM until Friday 1:00 PM.  His funeral ceremony will be held Friday 2:00 PM at Kanienkehaha Kanonsesneh Longhouse.  Burial will follow in Jock Road Cemetery.
