The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe's Tourism Office hosted their first ever Akwesasne Art Market during Small Business Saturday, on November 30th. The Art Market was set up at the Akwesasne Housing Authority from 9am to 3pm with over 25 local artisans and vendors. There was a good mix of Akwesasne's well known artists and some new and up and coming artists. Some artists displayed their artwork in Art Market to showcase their work to the public for the very first time.

Many know Jessica Sargent's work as a photographer, for this art market she presented her beautifully unique electroformed copper and gemstone jewelry. Sargent shared her table with well-known basketmaker Carrie Hill and Chill Baskets.

Victoria Ransom, of Wahiia Arts, and her son and little assistant Wendall Benedict.

Some vendors made the Art Show a family affair, such as Anna Thompson and her daughters and grandchildren all helping in one way or another. Anna was selling raffle tickets for a beautiful beaded necklace and earring set with a leather pouch, to help cover the cost of travel for her daughter Jenna, who is not receiving any financial assistance for her schooling in Ottawa. Thompson said, "We are working on a silent auction next week, hopefully. We will also be doing a quilt raffle; the quilt was donated by Eileen Montour."

While there is an abundance of artists who do pottery, basketry, painting and beading, photography was a welcome addition to the Art Market, making more diverse artwork available to local customers. The Art Market did not disappoint, and the turnout was great. One can only imagine what future Akwesasne Art Markets will look like, but right now it looked pretty good for our local artists and vendors.
