On Friday, November 18th, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne had the grand opening of the Tsi:Snaihne Walking Trail. The project came into action earlier this fall, and has been worked on over the course of the last few months. Chief April Adams-Phillips and Chief Joe Lazore gave an introduction and welcome speech at the grand opening ceremony, followed by a partnership presentation by Russell Roundpoint, the manager of the Akwesasne Area Management Board. Tracy Sunday-Cook, MCA Economic Development Special Projects Officer and the Trails Project Leader, then gave a presentation explaining the project overview and thanked all who helped make this possible. There was a ribbon cutting to officially conclude the ceremony. The new walking trail is located behind the Tsi:Snaihne Recreation, and available for public use. Members of the community are able to dedicate a memorial bench or tree to be placed on the trail. There are also plans to expand the trail in the near future. This walking trail is a great way to bring the community together, while respectfully making use of the resources we are given naturally on this earth.
