Petition Created to Remove MCA Grand Chief

A petition with approximately 200 signatures is being circulated in Akwesasne to remove MCA Grand Chief Abram Benedict. In a crossfire of words centered on accountability, transparency and the divestiture of the Port located in Cornwall, Mike Thomas, president of the Seven Nations of Canada, claims, “no one was notified that this was going on”.

Grand Chief Benedict countered with a litany of media venues where information is disseminated; weekly council meeting reports, CKON, Indian Time, MCA Facebook page, Abram Benedict Facebook page, MCA quarterly publications, monthly community meetings and a general meeting and their MCA newsletters.

MCA’s Akwesasne Election Law requires 478 signatures and all must be registered voters to make the removal successful. In addition, the petition must have an equal number of votes, plus one, from the official total number of votes Abram Benedict received on Election Day.

Indian Time will have a complete update on the petition in next week’s edition.
