On March 22nd, schools all across Canada took part in the National Walk For Water event to raise money and awareness for the well-building project. Kana:takon School proudly took part in this nationwide event. Students and staff collected over $1300 before the walk began! As students walked through the village of St. Regis, they collected another $600 in donations from MCA employees at Kanonkwatseri:io, AMPS, Indian Time Newspaper, CKON, Area Management Board, JUSTICE, and the MCA Administration buildings.

Working with the SOPAR agency, the cost of a well is $750 and it will provide a community of 250 people with fresh, clean, safe drinking water. Many communities in rural India do not have access to clean water, and the women and children of the village often walk 3 to 6 hours a day to find water for their families. The well in Boothpur Thanda was completed a couple of weeks ago. At the base of the well, a plaque bearing the title “Donor- Kana:takon School” has been displayed.

Kana:takon School wishes to thank all of the parents, MCA employees, friends and family members who contributed to this worthy cause. Together, our efforts have provided funds for 2 more wells and we have the satisfaction of knowing that this community of Akwesasne has helped a community many miles away in their quest for providing a necessity of life- water.
