An ATV was on its side Sunday following a brief police pursuit.

The Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service arrested a 24-year-old Akwesasne man early Sunday morning following a brief chase that ended with the suspect’s Rhino All-Terrain Vehicle rolling over.

The AMPS received notification at 6:05 a.m. Sunday that Chance Thompson may be heading in the direction of Kana:takon (St. Regis). Thompson was known to police to have several outstanding warrants for his arrest.

AMPS officers set up a stationary roadblock at the border and Thompson, they said, failed to stop at the intersection of 1st Street and Johnson Road in the village. They activated their emergency lights and began a short pursuit of the suspect that ended when the Rhino flipped over just a few feet from the St. Regis Road border line.

Witnesses said Thompson briefly attempted to flee from police on foot, and later, while in custody, he complained of pain to his arm.

Police arrested Thompson on seven outstanding warrants and a total of ten charges have been filed against him. They are Obstruct Police, Impaired Operation, Over 80, Flight from Police (X 3), Fail to Appear (X2), in addition to the new charges of Flight from Police, and Mischief over $1000.

Thompson was processed and transported to Valleyfield where he was ordered held in custody until another court appearance on Sept 5.
